Metropolitan New York City was the visual feast that surrounded me as I grew up in a large, loving extended family. I was close to my two maternal grandparents who were born in Europe, and early on made the transatlantic journey to meet the Swedish and English families they left behind.
My paternal grandmother, of French and Scottish descent, had traveled to Europe as a young woman. She was an artist who had left behind several paintings, one of which depicted a castle on a lake; its identity lost to us with time.
Years later, while driving through Europe for the first time, approaching Montreux, Switzerland, I was astonished to see that very landscape materialize before me: Lord Byron’s castle of Chillion.
That painting now hangs in my home today as a tangible reminder prompting me to remember, to engage, and to continue exploring the world outside my own…
